Leading independent prep school in Hertfordshire, Edge Grove, is truly ‘blooming’ this week as it received a prestigious level 5 award from the Royal Horticultural Society for its school gardening campaign.
The coveted award is given to the top one per cent of schools in the whole country making it a huge achievement and well-deserved accolade for the school’s ‘green fingered’ staff and pupils.
To achieve the award the school had to demonstrate that its gardens were used regularly by pupils throughout the school. This also involved parents and the wider community, who also supported the school’s efforts. More recently, Edge Grove’s gardening excellence was displayed via a popular plant stall at the school’s medieval fete and also via its very successful ‘honesty veg box’ campaign outside its music department.
Ben Evans, headmaster at Edge Grove commented: “We are very proud as a school and local community to have received this award from the Royal Horticultural Society. The staff, children and parents have all played their part in making our garden the perfect outdoor retreat, something that we can all enjoy and spend time in, which is particularly glorious now that the warmer weather has set in.”
There are almost 30,000 schools and gardening groups involved in the scheme across the country so to achieve the highest possible award is an amazing achievement.
Edge Grove has also recently achieved a prestigious gold award from the Woodland Trust for its work in and around the woodland on site. In the autumn the school will receive 150 trees which will all be planted around its 28 acres of beautiful grounds and will ensure that the original 18th century arboretum continues to develop and flourish.
