St Margaret’s School for Girls was placed third out of 28 in this year’s Sunday Times league table, based on this year’s national exam results, the Press and Journal reports.

This placing was also the highest of all the independent schools in the area.

The National 5 exam pass rate was also better than the independent average at 99%, compared with 94.6%.

Meanwhile, the school also over-performed in Highers, achieving a 96% pass rate, compared with an average of 92%.

Headteacher Anna Tomlinson said the results were the latest in a long history of exam success.

She said: “St Margaret’s has a long history of outstanding examination results but this year’s results have reached an all-time high. They are testament to the hard work of our pupils and the dedication and skill of our teachers. I believe that the combination of small class sizes in a single sex environment provides the right context for girls to flourish and these results endorse that sentiment.”

This year’s league table was a resounding success for the north-east with Robert Gordon College also crowned the Scottish Independent Secondary of the Year.

The award was based on outstanding higher results and a dramatic rise of 10 places in league table positioning.

In addition to the school’s strong tradition of academic success, the award was also based on its commitment to developing facilities.
